The word, “hammam”, originating from the Arabic Hamma (means “heating up”), means steam bath and is based on the heating of cold water. The tradition of the Turkish hammam extends far back, to a time before Turks had reached Anatolia. When the Turks arrived in Anatolia, they brought with them one bathing tradition and were confronted with another, that of Romans and Byzantines. The traditions merged, and with the addition of the Moslem concern for cleanliness, there arose an entirely new concept -Turkish Hamam. In the time it became an institution, with its system of customs.
The Turkish bath was much more than just a place to bath. It was a place where people of every rank and station, young and old, rich an poor could come freely.
From the individual’s point of view, the hammam was a familiar place from the earliest weeks of life right up to its very end. Important occasions during a lifespan were, and in some township still are, celebrated with rejoicing at the bath -the newborn’s fortieth day, the brides bathing complete with food and live music.
The “peshtemal” was used to be wrapped around the torso, from below the armpits to about mid-thigh, as the woman made her way to the “kurna” or marble basin. The peshtemal would be striped or checked, a colored mixture of silk and cotton, or pure cotton, or even pure silk. It was, even then, a fashion statement and according to your budget, you could get the highest quality peshtemals.
Then and there, peshtemal’s journey began. It was accessible, durable and it didn’t cover much ground due to its thin & light-weight texture. It was also perfect for the steamy atmosphere of Turkish Hamams since it was incredibly hot and something as light as peshtemal was the perfect option.
It has been centuries, and Turkish Towels still protect their places, Because peshtemals are light, durable, quick-drying and cover so little space. That makes Turkish Towels a great alternative to classic towels. They are now used all around the world and today, we can manufacture the type of peshtemal you desire.
